  • The app covers Amazon, Best Buy, Shopify stores, and millions more. One universal checkout that works across all of them.

  • Features include real-time pricing and availability, wishlists, price-drop buy orders (auto-purchase when a product hits your target price), and automatic coupon application.

  • The app is currently in beta. Setup takes about two minutes — instructions below.

From Infrastructure to Experience

We've spent the last year building infrastructure that lets AI agents complete real purchases across the internet. The Universal Checkout API, the Product Data API, the checkout pipeline underneath — all of it pointed toward one thing:

Making it possible to go from product discovery to confirmed order without ever switching contexts.

Today, we're bringing that to ChatGPT.

The Rye app for ChatGPT lets you search for any product, compare real-time prices across thousands of retailers — Amazon, Best Buy, Shopify stores, and millions more — and buy it. All without leaving your conversation.

No tabs. No copy-pasting URLs. No checkout forms. You find what you want, you confirm, and it's done.

Why We Built This

Just a few days ago, OpenAI scaled back native checkout inside ChatGPT. After partnering with Shopify, Stripe, and others to enable "Instant Checkout" directly from ChatGPT search results, only about a dozen of Shopify's millions of merchants ever went live. OpenAI hadn't even set up systems to collect and remit state sales taxes — a clear signal that transaction volume never materialized. The company officially shifted purchases to retailer apps: Instacart, Target, Expedia. The broad vision of buying from any merchant inside ChatGPT was shelved for now. (Full breakdown: OpenAI Scales Back ChatGPT Checkout.)

That's exactly the gap this app fills. OpenAI moved to an app-based model — and that model needs universal checkout infrastructure to enable agentic commerce at scale. Where Instant Checkout was gated by merchant opt-in through protocols like ACP, the Rye app is powered by our Universal Checkout API, which works on any merchant site via a product URL. No integration required from the merchant. No protocol adoption. That's how we cover 15,000+ merchants on day one — including Amazon, which isn't currently available through ChatGPT's native checkout.

That gap exists because checkout on the internet is fragmented. Every retailer runs a different system, and there's no universal way for an AI to complete a purchase on your behalf. Nearly half of the top U.S. retailers run fully custom e-commerce stacks with no standardized checkout API.

That's the problem we've been solving at Rye. Our Universal Checkout API handles payment, shipping, tax, and order confirmation across any merchant — regardless of their underlying platform. The ChatGPT app is the consumer-facing expression of that infrastructure. Same engine. Same coverage. Now accessible to anyone inside a conversation.

What It Does

Search and Compare Across the Entire Internet

Ask for a product — by name, by category, by use case — and Rye surfaces results from across thousands of retailers. You'll see real-time pricing, stock availability, and alternatives you might not have found on your own. No stale data, no cached inventory states. The product information is pulled fresh so you can trust what you're seeing.

Buy Without Leaving the Chat

When you're ready, you can check out directly inside ChatGPT. Rye handles the full transaction — payment processing, shipping, tax calculation, and order confirmation. One universal checkout that works with any store, whether it's Amazon, a Shopify merchant, or a retailer running a fully custom stack.

This isn't theoretical infrastructure — it's already powering real purchases through AI agents today. The same Universal Checkout API behind this ChatGPT app powers the buy-anything skill for OpenClaw, where users like Ryan Eade have replaced their entire Alexa-based purchasing workflow with agent-driven checkout through Rye. Ryan recently demoed it live on the Retailgentic podcast, successfully completing Amazon purchases that have historically broken every agentic commerce bot the host tested. Same engine, different surface.

Wishlists and Save for Later

Not ready to buy? Save products to your wishlist and come back to them whenever you want. Access your wishlist anytime through the app menu or by asking @Rye show me my wishlist.

Price-Drop Buy Orders

Set a target price on any product. If the all-in cost — product price plus shipping and tax — drops below your threshold, Rye will automatically purchase it for you. This is useful for items you want but aren't urgent about, or when you're watching for a deal.

Automatic Coupon Application

Rye automatically finds and applies the best available coupons at checkout, so you're always getting the best price without having to hunt for promo codes.

How to Get Started

The Rye app is currently in beta. Any ChatGPT user can install and start using it — setup takes about two minutes.

Step 1: Enable Developer Mode

  1. Open ChatGPT and navigate to Settings (click your name in the side panel).

  2. Go to Apps and click Advanced settings.

  3. Toggle on Developer Mode.

Step 2: Add the Rye App

  1. Still in Settings > Apps, click Create app.

  2. Enter the following configuration:

    • Name: Rye

    • MCP Server URL: https://mcp.rye.com/mcp

    • Authentication: No Auth

  3. Check "I understand and want to continue" and click Create.

Step 3: Start Shopping

That's it. You can now use the Rye app in any ChatGPT conversation:

  • Tag the app directly: @Rye I want to buy a Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum

  • Use it in the context of an ongoing shopping conversation: @Rye I'm interested in buying this product

  • Send it a product URL if you already know what you want

You can also update your personal details (shipping address, payment info) in the app settings to make future checkouts faster. Access settings through the hamburger menu or ask @Rye show me my settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rye app available in the ChatGPT App Store?

Not yet. The app is currently available through ChatGPT's developer mode, which any ChatGPT user can enable in about two minutes. As OpenAI continues building out the ChatGPT App Store, we expect the install process to get simpler — but the beta is fully functional today.

What can I buy through the Rye app?

Anything from Amazon, Shopify stores, Best Buy, and thousands more — over 15,000 merchants total, including retailers running fully custom e-commerce stacks. Orders currently ship to U.S. addresses. Merchant coverage expands continuously as Rye's Universal Checkout API adds new stores.

How does the Rye app handle payments? Is it secure?

Card details are tokenized through Stripe before they reach any part of the system. No card numbers ever touch ChatGPT, the Rye API, or the LLM. PCI compliance is handled entirely by the tokenization layer — you never expose raw payment data to the conversation.

What's the difference between the Rye app and ChatGPT's Instant Checkout?

ChatGPT's Instant Checkout required merchants to opt in through protocols like ACP — only about a dozen ever went live. OpenAI has since shifted to an app-based model. The Rye app works on any merchant site via a product URL, with no merchant integration or protocol adoption required. That's how it covers 15,000+ merchants on day one, including Amazon.

What happens after I place an order?

You'll receive an order confirmation directly in your ChatGPT conversation with order details and total. From there, order tracking and shipping updates follow the standard process for whatever merchant fulfilled the order — you'll get confirmation emails and tracking info just like any online purchase.

What's Next

The Rye app is currently available as a beta through ChatGPT's developer mode. As OpenAI continues to build out the ChatGPT App Store, we expect the install process to get even simpler — but the beta is fully functional and open to anyone who wants to try it today.

The timing matters. With OpenAI's shift away from native checkout, the app-based model is now the path forward for commerce inside ChatGPT — and Rye is positioned as the infrastructure layer that makes it work at scale. Meanwhile, the OpenClaw community is already proving that API-first checkout is the architecture that wins across agent platforms, not just ChatGPT.

We're also iterating on the app based on beta feedback — what features are most useful, where the UX can improve, and what additional capabilities would make this the default way to shop inside AI conversations.

If you're a developer building AI-powered commerce experiences, the same infrastructure powering this ChatGPT app is available through our APIs. The Product Data API gives you real-time product information from any merchant URL, and the Universal Checkout API handles the full purchase pipeline.
